Frankenstein Chapters 4-7 Due Monday  HERE ARE THE ANNOTATIONS:

Chapter 4

  1. Find “In other studies you go as far as others have gone before you, and there is nothing more to know; but in a scientific pursuit there is continual food for discovery and wonder.”  Highlight it and make a note in the margin about who the speaker is and what this means.
  2. What specific aspects of biology does Victor study? Highlight and make note in margin.
  3. How does Victor think his creation will regard him? Highlight it and make a note about it in the margin.
  4. Find and highlight “A human being in perfection ought always to preserve a calm and peaceful mind, and never to allow passion or a transitory desire to disturb his tranquility.”  How is this violating his own advice?
  5. Find and highlight references and descriptions regarding how Victor went about “creating”.
  6. Find and circle 3 words that would make good vocab words and write the definitions in the margin

Chapter 5

This week's Frankenstein ANNOTATIONS  (highlight AND write in the margins)

 Read all of Letters 1-4 and annotate in each letter.  Make sure you have specifically highlighted/annotated:

Letter 1:

  • highlight descriptive details about climate and landscape described by Robert.
  • Highlight references to light.
  • Find and circle 2 words that would make good vocab words. write a definition in the margin

Letter 4:

  • What do the sailors first see in the distance – highlight the details and make a margin note
  • What happens the next morning, highlight the occurrence with the stranger and make a note in the margin about who it is
  • Highlight where there is an indication that the narration will shift
  • Find and circle 2 words that would make good vocab words. write a definition in the margin

Chapter 1: 

  1. Explain how Mary Shelley interjects her social interest of caring for the poor into Frankenstein.  Highlight the examples and make a note in the margin.
  2. Show how Shelley portrays the women, Caroline and Elizabeth, in Chapter one. Be specific and highlight key words or sentences and label.
  3. Describe Victor’s childhood.   Highlight key words or sentences and label.
  4. How does Elizabeth come into the Frankenstein home.  Find the location of the story and highlight.
  5. How does Victor feel about Elizabeth.  Highlight the evidence.

Chapter 2

  1. What are Victor’s social tendencies and how does he interacts with friends? Highlight text evidence and write in the margin.
  2. Contrast Victor’s academic interests with those of his friend, Henry Clerval. Highlight and note in the margin.
  3. Find and highlight the quote “I find it arise, like a mountain river, from ignoble and almost forgotten sources; but, swelling as it proceeded, it became the torrent which, in its course, has swept away all my hopes and joys.”   Infer what Victor means when he says this about his desire to learn about science and make a note in the margin.
  4. Highlight the authors and topics Victor becomes obsessed with reading.
  5. Find and highlight Victor’s experience with lightening.   Write about how it is a turning point in his life.
  6. What is Victor’s destiny?  Locate a quote from the novel and highlight it with a margin note.
  7. Find and circle 2 words that would make good vocab words. write a definition in the margin

Chapter 3

1) Highlight important lines in the paragraph in which we learn about the illnesses of Elizabeth and Caroline.

2)  Make a note of where Victor is going to be going to university

3) Highlight what Caroline Frankenstein says on her deathbed about her hopes for Elizabeth and Victor’s future.

4) Highlight sentences that show how Elizabeth proceeds after Caroline’s death.  “She indeed veiled her grief….”   Write two adjectives that could describe Elizabeth. 

5)  Find the quote that begins with “Chance – or rather the evil influence, the Angel of Destruction, which asserted omnipotent sway over me from the moment I turned my reluctant steps from my father’s door….” -Highlight it and make a note in the margin about what it means.

6) Find and circle 2 words that would make good vocab words. Write the definition in the margin.
